What Does It Mean When Mold is Found During a Home Inspection?

Home inspections can be daunting in that they can expose some costly issues to a house you want to buy. When a home inspection is underway, there’s always a chance the inspector will find something that will make the home buyers pause. If your Harrisburg home inspection report shows mold infestation, what should you do?

Many homes are prone to mold due to moisture issues. Mold is caused by fungus, and if mold spores are found they can multiply. Mold can cause health problems and is considered a very serious issue if discovered inside of a home.

The good news is that in most cases, the mold issues can be resolved by going to the source of the moisture and eliminating it. Depending on the extent of the infestation, additional clean up or removal may be necessary. However, if you’re a home buyer interested in going through with the purchase of a home with mold in it you must consult with your real estate agent regarding negotiation after your screening results.

Mold can be a frightening word in the home buying process, but it doesn’t have to be a deal breaker if you love the house.

It’s important to get the home inspected by a licensed home inspector because it’s a specialized screening that can tell you if the issue will be a common recurrence or not once remedied. During the mold screening we perform, we will take one air sample in one interior area and one outdoor control sample, with surface sampling of random or requested suspect mold growths. It will then be processed by a qualified lab to determine results.
