Is a Missing Backflow Valve a Big Deal?

Backflow Water.

Backflow is not something most homeowners or home buyers think about. In fact, most have never even heard of it; however, it can be a concern.

A common concern home inspectors, also known as real estate inspectors, find is an irrigation system (in-ground sprinkler) improperly installed without a backflow preventer. A backflow preventer is often the single most expensive component (Outside of the control panel) of an irrigation system and an easy place for installers to cut corners.

Without a backflow preventer, downstream pressure can build up and become greater than the upstream pressure. This can push contaminated water into your drinking supply and affect the health of your family. Your home inspector will recommend having one installed to prevent this from happening. Further, if the water in your faucets is cloudy, tastes off, or smells unusual, you should consider asking a home inspector to conduct a water test.
